Length: 4 classes, 1 hour each
Prerequisite: K9 Nose Work IV. Must be reasonably proficient on birch.
Total students: 5
This class builds on the hunting and odor recognition skills learned in K9 Nose Work III and IV, and prepares the dog/handler team for their NACSW Odor Recognition Test (ORT) with birch as the target odor. The class may be repeated as often as needed, and when the team is ready, will introduce and imprint the second and third target odors of anise and clove. Ultimately, teams will prepare for the anise and clove ORTs, in order to earn the ORT Title needed to compete at the NW1 level. You will focus on container searches, continuing to build dog/handler teamwork, and improving your observation skills, and the number of teams is limited to 4 to allow each team as much search time as is possible. Even if a dog/handler team does not want to compete, this is a great way to keep your dog searching and having fun with nose work! Please note that classes are structures so that dogs work one at a time in the search area. To accomplish this and to allow you to observe the other dogs in class, it is helpful but not required to crate your dog during class.
